The whole thought of presenting these daintinesss was a portion of the scheme of diversifying the range of operation of the concern to include other competitory daintinesss like other companies in the fast nutrient industry concern ( Daszkowskii ) . In add-on, the company made enormous alterations to its pizza formula: from the crust up this twelvemonth, 2010, which ushered in new alterations in the cheese, sauce, and dough that are used in fixing their pizza ( Young ) . The launch of this new formula was viewed by many consumers as a rectification to their earlier error in which the company s merchandise had been criticized in footings of gustatory sensation by many persons. This had affected the perceptual experience of the merchandise of the company and so the company confirmed this position in one of its advertisement runs, which promoted the new formula ( Daszkowskii ) . In August, Domino s introduced an application which allows consumers to order for pizza straight from their iPhone. During the launch, the company recorded monolithic downloads but harmonizing to the company s CEO, the company is presently undertaking steps to increase the figure of clients or users using this exciting service ( Globaldata ) . Domino s Incorporation was a small spot behind in footings of users utilizing this service behind their acrimonious rival Pizza Hut. Pizza Hut managed over 100,000 downloads of the application in merely two hebdomads after the launch, which was about 24 % more than what Domino s achieved. This is the chief ground that has triggered the company s scheme of using hunt engines such as Google and Yahoo through the Pay per Click system, which the company hopes it will increase the client traffic to their application download ( Young ) . In the past, most gross revenues of the company have been supported by the promotional activities that have accompanied every scheme that the company has of all time introduced. Domino s is presently numbering on the promotional runs it has adopted establishing its statement on the thought that extended publicities will bear good fruits like the promotional run that the company held following the launch of its American Legend forte pizza in 2009, as earlier mentioned ( Daszkowskii ) . By and large, the company s scheme are geared towards enlargement and deriving a competitory advantage in the fast nutrient industry ( Young ) . Domino s is besides bivouacing on the pricing scheme that it introduced back in 2009 which was aimed to convey back some price-sensitive clients under their barbell technique. In add-on, Domino s is be aftering to go on the advertisement wars, which are aimed at aiming major rivals like Subways and Pizza Hut. One other important strength is the intelligent selling services adopted by the company. These advertisement schemes have contributed to its trade name image in the company, which has an consequence of inciting a sense of keeping and distinction. The company continues to follow the effectual supply ironss, which has given it an advantage in guaranting effectual supply of all its shops. The company besides has one major failing, which is chiefly the weakening or diminishing bottom line d ue to worsen in gross revenues and slow growing ( Datamonitor ) . The company has enlargement chances in India and China where it has really few franchises and shops by and large. In add-on, the company has an chance to present new merchandises in its bing bill of fare particularly pizza toppings and spirit additives that are specified for a given part, this will give the much needed drift. A figure of menaces exist within the company and they include the increasing consciousness of by consumers on the black effects of fast nutrient points that have high Calories within them. The uninterrupted researches on effects of additives like spirits are yet other menaces for the Domino s. In add-on, the wellness sector has continued to knock the fast nutrient merchandises on evidences that they are saturated with substances like sugar, oils, fats, and Na: this continues to present serious menaces for the hereafter of the company ( Young ) . Recommendations Having considered the SWOT analysis above, it is now possible to give the undermentioned recommendations to the company. First, the company should concentrate on increasing its web coverage in India and China in order to prehend the looming chance in the two emerging economic systems. India and China carry less than 2 % of the entire shops under the Domino s company ( Globaldata ) . The figure of shops should be increased to more than 20 % in the following three old ages in order to run into the company s enlargement scheme that it is presently prosecuting. Second, Domino s should concentrate wholly on client trueness through take a firm standing on quality and guaranting that all shops deliver the best daintinesss. These two recommendations are based on the ground that the degree of competition in the fast nutrient industry is turning steadily ( Young ) . Third, Dominos Incorporation should see using their intelligent advertisement techniques to concentrate on all the participants or rivals in the market other than merely concentrating on one rival, Subways. Concentrating on one rival may hold serious effects to the company particularly where established concerns like Macdonald may come up with clever schemes that may impact the stableness of the company and growing in general ( Datamonitor ) . Fourth, Domino s should better their advanced schemes that they have adopted their on-line selling and merchandising. Pizza Hut performed better when compared to Domino s company in footings of online wagess despite holding invested about the same sum of money in their online services section. The current operating company intercrossed theoretical account is estimated to be at 70 % franchised while 30 % of the shops are owned. The figure should be adjusted to cut down operational costs by increasing the figure of franchised concerns to about 85 % in order to cut down the overall operational costs. Fifth, Domino s Inc should concentrate on bettering its trade name image because this is one of its strengths ; this can be achieved through uninterrupted strengthening and reenforcing their trade name in the market ( Young ) . One critical factor that needs to be carefully taken into consideration by the company is the extremely dynamic socio-cultural alteration or the altering life styles of the people in the United States and the across the Earth every bit good. Their merchandises should reflect these alterations if the concern is to accomplish continuity. Companies like MacDonald Incorporation dressed ore on cultural alterations that occur and later develop their employees in order to run into the demands of altering life styles ( Datamonitor ) . In relation to the recommendations above, Dominos Incorporation should concentrate its attending on on-line gross revenues and use this consequence to redefine their ain in-store dining schemes to fit the growing in on-line gross revenues as mentioned above. The usage of cyberspace in the universe today is increasing at a faster rate and the growing in on-line gross revenues of the company that have been noted can merely be supported through taking a acute expression at the in-store dining schemes. Finally, the Domino s should look at available options in their client mix or churn: the company should really cut down it in order to stay competitory and recognize its schemes and aims every bit good ( Daszkowskii ) . Achieving ends requires a definite way that is clearly built on the strengths and focused on the chances of the company ( Young ) . The recommendations given above reflect on the current strengths and chances of the company: they are aimed at get the better ofing any menaces and the failings that the company faces presently. Decision It is apparent at this point that Domino s Pizza Incorporation has a good trade name image, which is one of its strongest points. In add-on, the company has had a good history despite a few cases and unfavorable judgments on gustatory sensation as mentioned above. Domino s advertisement schemes are rather effectual and have worked to better the gross revenues of the company every bit good as its competiveness in the market. However, the company faces major menaces that might set the hereafter of the company to dire trial. The sociocultural alterations that continue to happen in the universe today require that the company make rapid alterations and uninterrupted monitoring of the life styles of the people in assorted parts of the universe: particularly where they operate. There degree of competition in the fast nutrient industry is turning stronger by twenty-four hours and keeping loyal clients is the ultimate scheme for any concern in the industry today. Appendix A: External Analysis Social alterations There are alterations in life styles of the people in the United States for illustration and this continues to impact on the company ; this besides happens in other countries as good. Technological alterations The demand for on-line gross revenues is presently on the addition. Economic tendencies The company underwent the 2008 recession, merely like many other companies, but remained stable. The growing rate is expected to increase in the close hereafter to approximately 20.6 % ( see Global information ) Political/ regulative tendencies Given the fact that the company operates in many states, political interventions are common. The paper will look into systems in the two organizational types to identif y similarities or differences to determine the argument. Management in Military and Civil Organization Though the military is always perceived to be a purely hierarchical system with chains of command that must be adhered to, there have been calls from experts and leaders in the military departments for a liberalization of the chains in the organizations. In the year 2001, for example, the United Statesââ¬â¢ secretary of defense made a call to the office of the president concerning a threat that had been identified in the department of defense. The threat was about the system of administration that was realized in the military. After the information was passed, a number of changes were realized in the countryââ¬â¢s military departments such as the ââ¬Å"supply chain system, harness information technology and cut costs by adopting practices from the corporate worldâ⬠(Managing, 2003, p. 1). The perception that might be held by either the military or the corporate world th at one is more efficient than the other might not be necessarily true. While the military view the cooperate world as more efficient, there are a lot of things that managers in business organizations ought to learn from the military. He also explains that business organizations ought to identify the ââ¬Å"lessons that have been learnt over decades in the militaryâ⬠(Managing, 2003, p. 1). The military is actually designed more like the business world structure. Just as the supply of goods and services are critical to the lives and well being of consumers in the economic set up, is the military provision a necessity to the lives of soldiers in the field. The two organizations are even almost similar in their supply chains. The supply chain foreword direction flow is a similarity in the two organizations with military equipments being transferred along steps of a chain all the way to the final ground soldier just like inventory is transferred through stages until its finished fo rm is delivered to the final consumer.Advertising Looking for critical writing on business economics? The military has also been adopting approaches used in the corporate world. Employment of academicians into systems for guidance and research is one of the lessons that have been learnt by the military from the corporate bodies. Technologies such as in information systems have also been adopted by the United Statesââ¬â¢ military which at one time became the country leader in information technology. The pentagonââ¬â¢s implementation of ââ¬Å"Customer Relations Management, Supplier Management and Enterprise Resource Planning systemsâ⬠(Managing, 2003, p. 1) and the use of retailerââ¬â¢s functionality systems i n military provisionary chain is also a reflection of developed similarity in the two organizations (Managing, 2003). In what showed compatibility of methods in the two organizations, the American military also formed a committee in the year 2001 that was purely composed of chief executives from the corporate world to help the military in understanding techniques of gaining efficiencies. It is also reported that almost all techniques that have been developed by the military have received adoption by the corporate world (Managing, 2003). As Price David (2008) recounted, there are a number of business management structures that have been adopted by the military. The military, for example, has financial managers who are useful in decision making regarding resource allocations. Business management concepts such as efficiency and cost effectiveness in relation to managing resources that are in most cases scarce, even in military environments have been essentials in the military. Like in business systems, the militaryââ¬â¢s top administration is also characterized by an extensive level of ââ¬Å"Planning, Programming, and Budgetingâ⬠(Price, 2008, p. 1) that helps in the effective utilization of resources for the attainment of military objectives (Price, 2008). Features such as monitoring and evaluation have at the same time become common in the two organizational systems. Another similarity in the two systems is the power that is vested on the capital supplier to the systems. Just as business organizations aim at making decisions in the interest of share holders, the militaryââ¬â¢s decisions are aimed at satisfying the interest of tax payers (Price, 2008). Conclusion Following the discussion, it is evident that the military and the corporate world share a lot of things in common. It is also evident that concepts that have over time been identified by one party have in the end have been adopted by the other. Due to similarities identified in their systems and operations, it can be concluded that planning for and implementation of information technology in the two systems require similar organizational competence.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on Planning for and implementation of information technology in civilian and military organizations specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More References Managing. The History of How Dogs Were Domesticated
The History of How Dogs Were Domesticated The history of dog domestication is that of an ancient partnership between dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) and humans. That partnership was likely originally based on a human need for help with herding and hunting, for an early alarm system, and for a source of food in addition to the companionship many of us today know and love. In return, dogs received companionship, protection, shelter, and a reliable food source. But when this partnership first occurred is still under some debate. Dog history has been studied recently using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), which suggests that wolves and dogs split into different species around 100,000 years ago. Although mtDNA analysis has shed some light on the domestication event(s) which may have occurred between 40,000 and 20,000 years ago, researchers are not agreed on the results. Some analyses suggest that the original domestication location of dog domestication was in East Asia; others that the middle east was the original location of domestication; and still others that later domestication took place in Europe. What the genetic data has shown to date is that the history of dogs is as intricate as that of the people they lived alongside, lending support to the long depth of the partnership, but complicating origin theories. Two Domestications In 2016, a research team led by bioarchaeologist Greger Larson (Frantz et al. cited below) published mtDNA evidence for two places of origin for domestic dogs: one in Eastern Eurasia and one in Western Eurasia. According to that analysis, ancient Asian dogs originated from a domestication event from Asian wolves at least 12,500 years ago; while European Paleolithic dogs originated from an independent domestication event from European wolves at least 15,000 years ago. Then, says the report, at sometime before the Neolithic period (at least 6,400 years ago), Asian dogs were transported by humans to Europe where they displaced European Paleolithic dogs. That would explain why earlier DNA studies reported that all modern dogs were descended from one domestication event, and also the existence of evidence of two domestication event from two different far-flung locations. There were two populations of dogs in the Paleolithic, goes the hypothesis, but one of them- the European Paleolithic dog- is now extinct. A lot of questions remain: there are no ancient American dogs included in most of the data, and Frantz et al. suggest that the two progenitor species were descended from the same initial wolf population and both are now extinct. However, other scholars (Botiguà © and colleagues, cited below) have investigated and found evidence to support migration event(s) across the central Asia steppe region, but not for a complete replacement. They were unable to rule out Europe as the original domestication location. The Data: Early Domesticated Dogs The earliest confirmed domestic dog anywhere so far is from a burial site in Germany called Bonn-Oberkassel, which has joint human and dog interments dated to 14,000 years ago. The earliest confirmed domesticated dog in China was found in the early Neolithic (7000ââ¬â5800 BCE) Jiahu site in Henan Province. Evidence for co-existence of dogs and humans, but not necessarily domestication, comes from Upper Paleolithic sites in Europe. These hold evidence for dog interaction with humans and includeà Goyet Caveà in Belgium,à Chauvetà cave in France, andà Predmosti in the Czech Republic. European Mesolithic sites like Skateholm (5250ââ¬â3700 BC) in Sweden have dog burials, proving the value of the furry beasts to hunter-gatherer settlements. Danger Cave in Utah is currently the earliest case of dog burial in the Americas, at about 11,000 years ago, likely a descendant of Asian dogs. Continued interbreeding with wolves, a characteristic found throughout the life history of dogs everywhere, has apparently resulted in the hybrid black wolf found in the Americas. Black fur coloration is a dog characteristic, not originally found in wolves. Dogs as Persons Some studies of dog burials dated to the Late Mesolithic-Early Neolithic Kitoi period in the Cis-Baikal region of Siberia suggests that in some cases, dogs were awarded person-hood and treated equally to fellow humans. A dog burial at the Shamanaka site was a male, middle-aged dog which had suffered injuries to its spine, injuries from which it recovered. The burial, radiocarbon dated to ~6,200 years ago (cal BP), was interred in a formal cemetery, and in a similar manner to the humans within that cemetery. The dog may well have lived as a family member. A wolf burial at the Lokomotiv-Raisovet cemetery (~7,300 cal BP) was also an older adult male. The wolfs diet (from stable isotope analysis) was made up of deer, not grain, and although its teeth were worn, there is no direct evidence that this wolf was part of the community. Nevertheless, it too was buried in a formal cemetery. These burials are exceptions, but not that rare: there are others, but there is also is evidence that fisher-hunters in Baikal consumed dogs and wolves, as their burned and fragmented bones appear in refuse pits. Archaeologist Robert Losey and associates, who conducted this study, suggest that these are indications that Kitoi hunter-gatherers considered that at least these individual dogs were persons. Modern Breeds and Ancient Origins Evidence for the appearance of breed variation is found in several European Upper Paleolithic sites. Medium-sized dogs (with wither heights between 45ââ¬â60 cm) have been identified in Natufian sites in the Near East dated to ~15,500-11,000 cal BP). Medium to large dogs (wither heights above 60 cm) have been identified in Germany (Kniegrotte), Russia (Eliseevichi I), and Ukraine (Mezin), ~17,000-13,000 cal BP). Small dogs (wither heights under 45 cm) have been identified in Germany (Oberkassel, Teufelsbrucke, and Oelknitz), Switzerland (Hauterive-Champreveyres), France (Saint-Thibaud-de-Couz, Pont dAmbon) and Spain (Erralia) between ~15,000-12,300 cal BP. See the investigations by archaeologist Maud Pionnier-Capitan and associates for more information. A recent study of pieces of DNA called SNPs (single-nucleotide polymorphism) which have been identified as markers for modern dog breeds and published in 2012 (Larson et al) comes to some surprising conclusions: that despite the clear evidence for marked size differentiation in very early dogs (e.g., small, medium and large dogs found at Svaerdborg), this has nothing to do with current dog breeds. The oldest modern dog breeds are no more than 500 years old, and most date only from ~150 years ago. Theories of Modern Breed Origination Scholars now agree that most of the dog breeds we see today are recent developments. However, the astounding variation in dogs is a relic of their ancient and varied domestication processes. Breeds vary in size from the one pound (.5 kilogram) teacup poodles to giant mastiffs weighing over 200 lbs (90 kg). In addition, breeds have different limb, body, and skull proportions, and they also vary in abilities, with some breeds developed with special skills such as herding, retrieving, scent detection, and guiding. That may be because domestication occurred while humans were all hunter-gatherers at the time, leading extensively migrant lifeways. Dogs spread with them, and thus so for a while dog and human populations developed in geographic isolation for a time. Eventually, however, human population growth and trade networks meant people reconnected, and that, say scholars, led to the genetic admixture in the dog population. When dog breeds began to be actively developed about 500 years ago, they were created out of a fairly homogenous gene pool, from dogs with mixed genetic heritages which had been developed in widely disparate locations. Since the creation of kennel clubs, breeding has been selective: but even that was disrupted by World Wars I and II, when breeding populations all over the world were decimated or went extinct. Dog breeders have since reestablished such breeds using a handful of individuals or combining similar breeds. English Class - Essay Example Both articles also identify the parties involved in the incident and reasons behind the fracas, which finally culminates into the killing of five colonists by British Army. Another aspect of similarity is that the articles also carry the engraving of Paul Revere and mentions about one of the victims, Crispus Attucks, who later became a hero. The first article is a brief account of the incident, which is focused on the historical perspective of the occurrence. It is divided into different sections, each dealing with a specific aspect of the incident. Though the second article also provides an historical account of the incident, it is more focused on how Paul Revere, an artist who ââ¬Å"capitalized on the Boston Massacreâ⬠to promote his engravings. (The Boston Massacre: A Behind-the-Scenes: Look at Paul Revereââ¬â¢s Most Famous Engraving 1). The former article also provides information about the trials that entailed the incident. On the other hand, the latter is silent on this aspect. The first article dwells on some myths about the Boston Massacre, and emphasizes the fact that ââ¬Å"there were other historical milestonesâ⬠that forced Boston to revolt (What was the Boston Massacre par. 9). The other article attempts to interpret the allusions shown in the engravings of Paul Revere. The Boston Massacre: A Behind-the-Scenes: Look at Paul Revereââ¬â¢s Most Famous Engraving. Discuss Erikson's theory of development Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Discuss Erikson's theory of development - Essay Example ââ¬Å"Ego identity is the conscious sense of self that we develop through social interactionâ⬠(Cherry 1). In the point of view of Erikson, the ego identity of an individual is controlled by the experiences he/she goes through in everyday life. As one interacts more with the society, it adds to oneââ¬â¢s knowledge. Thus, the action and behavior of an individual is governed by his/her ego identity as well as a sense of competence. Eriksonââ¬â¢s theory is based upon eight stages of psychosocial development (Harder). Each of these deals with a particular area of competence in life. It is up to the individual how he/she copes with the challenges encountered in each of the eight stages. If an individual performs well in a certain stage, he/she gains a feeling of mastery that is the symbol of ego strength. On the other hand, poor management of a stage will inculcate a feeling of inadequacy in the individual. The eight stages identified by Erikson are discussed below: Stage 1: T his stage is titled as trust vs mistrust. This stage essentially starts from the birth and lasts till the completion of first year of life. Because of the total dependability of child on adults in this stage, the development of trust in child depends upon the quality of care given by the adults. Development of trust is vital to achieve the sense of security in the whole life. Children whose caregivers are emotionally fake, inconsistent, and rejecting develop mistrust. When the caregivers are prudent and dutiful towards the child, the child develops trust that lasts for the whole life. Stage 2: This stage develops autonomy or doubt and shame in the child. This stage occurs in the early childhood and talks about the development of personal control in the children. When a child learns how to control various needs of the body, he/she feels independent. Moreover, a child makes choices between various types of foods, clothes and toys. Successful completion of the second stage makes a chil d confident. Otherwise, the child suffers from self-doubt. Stage 3: This stage decides the development of either initiative or guilt in the child. This covers the preschool years. Social interaction in this period gives a feeling of control and power to the child. Successful interaction with others in this stage inculcates leadership skills in the child, and unsuccessful experience inculcates guilt. Stage 4: This stage decides between inferiority and industry. The stage starts from age 5 and lasts till age 11. The encouragement received from parents makes the child competent and confident, and lack of encouragement by parents makes the child unconfident. Stage 5: This stage decides between confusion and identity and occurs in adolescence. Encouragement received in this stage provides a person with a strong identity and lack of encouragement makes him/her confused. Stage 6: This stage decides between isolation and intimacy and occurs in early adulthood. Development of intimacy in rel ationships makes them secure. Development of intimacy requires a strong sense of identity. Stage 7: Stage 7 is about the development of generativity or stagnation in a person. This stage focuses on the career building. If a person wins in this stage, he/she feels like contributing to the world positively. Failure in this stage lends the feeling of idleness to the person. Stage 8: This stage inculcat

Postmodern Poetry - Confessional Poets Essay -- essays research papers
Postmodern Poetry - Confessional Poets With World War II finally over and a chapter in history written, the next chapter is about to begin. The twentieth century brings with it a new literary movement called postmodern, where poetry is "breaking from modernism" and taking on a whole new style Within postmodern poetry emerge confessional poets whom remove the mask that has masked poetry from previous generations and their writings become autobiographical in nature detailing their life's most intense personal experiences, therefore becoming the focus of their work. Considered to be the "mainstream of postmodern poetry" confessional poetry did not hit its peak until the late twentieth century. Confessional poetry is in direct contrast to the poetry of William Butler Yeats. Yeats poetry, Romantic in nature, depended on symbols and images to convey his themes. Confessional poetry is very direct and conveys the inner most feelings of the post modern poets. The twentieth century brought forth many confessional and post confessional poets who appeared to be embarking on unmarked territory. Confessional poets Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath, Theodore Roehtke and post confessional poet Adreinne Rich all dealt with taboo subjects. Their life held an intensity of personal experience that became the focus of their work. Confessional poetry does not simply touch upon emotion. Confessional poetry allows emotion or looks at emotion through an examining eye rather to drive poems, permeating each poem with an air of necessity, the necessity of conv eying and aiming to understand emotion through confession. Postmodern poet, Robert Lowell's poetry really captures the true essence of confessional poetry by sharing his own raw emotions with the reader. The mask that once was placed upon the influence of the symbolist, Eliot and Pound, Lowell removes. The speaker of his poems is unequivocally himself. Lowell does not spare himself in his poetry. In his poem "Man and Wife" he deals directly with his own marriage. The reader gets grotesque glimpses into his marital life. He begins "Tamed by Miltown, we lie on mother's bed." And later tells how "All night I have held your hand,/ as if you had/ a fourth time faced the kingdom of the mad-/ its hackney... ...bsp;The thing itself and not the myth. Diving deep into the inner most recesses of her self, exploring the wreck of her own life, Rich feels compelled to map the geography of her self. Rich declares in a forward to her poems "with the failure of patriarchal politics" and "to be a woman at this time" is to know extraordinary forms of anger, joy, and impatience, love and hope. Poetry, words on paper, are necessary but not enough; we need to touch the living who shareâ⬠¦ our determination that the sexual myths underlying the human condition can and shall be â⬠¦ changed. Rich's work is personal, intimate and confessional. Confessional and post confessional poets clearly chose to write about subjects that were taboo. That took their private lives and deep inner thoughts and made them public. Confessional poets took the baton from the moderns such as Yeat's and Eliot and took poetry to another whole level. They opened up their heart, mind and feelings to a society that was able to relate.

Moral Living Synoptic Question Essay
In this essay it is my intention to examine the theme of moral living within the Old Testament and the Celtic Church. Morality refers to ethical issues. It is the quality of being in accord with standards of right or good conduct. It is a system of ideas of right and wrong conduct. There are two interlinked themes of religious morality and social morality under moral living. The foundation of moral living within the Old Testament is the Sinai Covenant. Whereas, the basis of morality in Celtic Church is Saint Patrick; his moral base was always routed in his scriptural beliefs. Moses, for example, made a covenant with Yahweh on Mount Sinai, the principles from which are the foundation for the Judah Christian faith today, where he received the Ethical Decalogue (10 Commandments). As Drane states, ââ¬Å"the commands were essentially moral requirements. Honesty, truth and justice were more important to Yahweh than the performance of religious rites.â⬠Love of God and Love of Neighbour were the two commandments at the core of the Ethical Decalogue. The first three commandments central religious morality however, the last seven focus on Love of Neighbour and Social Morality. Winward states, ââ¬Å"no man could be in a right relationship with God who was not in a right relationship with his fellow men.â⬠The people of Israel had an obligation as the chosen people to obey the Ethical Decalogue. Abraham was called by God to give up his polytheistic ways. God promised Abraham that he would never give up on him. As Heinsch states, ââ¬Å"he had to journey to a foreign land alone trusting in Godââ¬â¢s guidance.â⬠If Abraham fulfilled this request God promised him three things, Great Nation, Land (which was Canaan) and Protection. At this time, Abraham worshipped the popular moon god, ââ¬Å"sinâ⬠and was to break with idolatry and become monotheistic. Epstein stated that, ââ¬Å"Abraham turned to the service of the one and only God whom he recognised as the creator of heaven and earth.â⬠Abrahamââ¬â¢s love of the one true God and his change from idolatry reflects similarities with Saint Patrick. Patrick arrived in Ireland to a pagan country. The people of Ireland were idolaters in that they worshipped as many as 400 gods, with the main god being the Dagda (the father). The Celts held such things as the sun, trees, groves, water and birds to be sacred. Joyce states that they had the tendency to ââ¬Å"find the divine in all of created nature.â⬠Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland to transform the pagan people to monotheism. He wanted them to worship and love the one true God. Patrick adopted pagan practice to Christian tradition, for example, he changed the worship of the ââ¬Å"sunâ⬠to the ââ¬Å"son.â⬠Patrick wanted the people to become monks and virgins for Christ. He advocated that true worship of God required to be newly baptised (converted from paganism to Christianity.) Patrick wanted the people to convert freely; they were never forced as the decision to become a Christian had to come from the heart. When Patrick left a place he made sure he left a building (church) to be used for communal worship. Like the Old Testament prophets, Patrick expected his ordained to be good role models to the people. Unfortunately in the Old Testament the religious leaders did not always do this. Ezekiel, for example, was to inform the people that God was going to hold the religious leaders responsible as they had led the people astray instead of encouraging them to worship only Yahweh. God told Ezekiel to prophesy to the leaders, ââ¬Å"shepherds have been feeding themselves, should not, you the shepherds feed the sheep.â⬠In tandem with this, the prophet Elijah also had to deal with the people of Israelââ¬â¢s idolatry. He was aware that there was a lack of steadfast love due to the people worshipping both Yahweh and Baal (god of fertility.) Elijah challenged the people about this saying, ââ¬Å"how long will you go limping with two different opinions?â⬠The people needed to stop worshipping both Yahweh and Baal and were to only worship the one true God, Yahweh. Elijah had little sympathy for the people worshipping both Gods. He challenged King Ahab to a contest on Mount Carmel between Yahweh and Baal to determine who the true God is. Elijah had a great victory as Yahweh won, usually this would be celebrated but instead, Elijah went to Mount Horeb as he knew the peopleââ¬â¢s change of heart of Yahweh as the one true God was temporary and this was not good enough. True love of God was required. In line with this, Patrick also challenged the pagan peopleââ¬â¢s ways through their worship of Dagda and Lugh. It took a long time for the pagan people to convert to truly worshipping one God. Paganism continued to exist alongside early Christianity 100 years after Patrick. Amos spoke out about social injustices, he stated, ââ¬Å"let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.â⬠Amos spoke about respect for marriage, something which King David lacked. He had an affair with Bathsheba and committed the sins of lust, adultery and murder. He was punished for this as Yahweh was to ââ¬Å"raise up evil against you out of your own house.â⬠Davidââ¬â¢s son died as a result of his sins. Similarly, Patrick also showed a respect for life. He spoke out about injustices such as slavery and condemnation of wealth in his letter to Coroticus. Patrick respected women and this was reflected in the Letter to Coroticus. In L19 Patrick expresses his concern for women. The women were taken as captives, to be distributed ââ¬Å"as prizes.â⬠Patrick makes it clear that the fate of Coroticus and his men is to be ââ¬Å"lorded overâ⬠for all eternity by those whom they regarded to be ââ¬Å"barbarian Irish.â⬠In L4, Patrick also speaks up against murder and slavery ââ¬â he grieves for those captured and killed and calls the perpetrators themselves ââ¬Å"captives of Satanâ⬠the punishment met out to them will be ââ¬Å"external life in hell.â⬠To conclude, Christianity is now one of the leading world religions and therefore the mission of both the prophets and Patrick was successful. There will always be a call for people to repent and convert to Christianity with a return to a moral life.
